West LA/Malibu Surfrider Volunteers Take Ocean Education Inland!
Surfrider volunteers Iman Jafarynejad and Amber Kloss recently took their love for the ocean inland to teach elementary school kids in Highland Park about the importance of urban runoff, the 3 R’s and their role in the watershed. Over the course of the day, Iman and Amber engaged more than 500 K-5th graders in the “Sea to Summit” video and an interactive educational game created by the West LA/Malibu Surfrider Chapter.
“It’s really rewarding to see how responsive and enthusiastic the kids are about the environment when they learn that everything is connected to the ocean’ says Iman, Educational Intern for the chapter. “Teaching a kid is the equivalent of teaching a tribe,” notes Lindsey Jurca, WLAM Educational Chair. “When you give them a message that inspires them, they just can’t help but share it with the world.”
