Task Forces
Surfrider WLAM organizes task force groups to investigate chronic water quality issues at area beaches. These small groups focus on specific problems, allowing them to act effectively and to make lasting improvements at their beach. As a grass roots organization, Surfrider has earned a reputation for respectful advocacy, and the Task Forces are a fun way for volunteers to build on existing relationships in the community, to engage with local government, and to earn the deep satisfaction of making change in our polluted beaches.
For information on our task forces, to get involved, or to report a problem at your local beach, contact our Task Force Director Vanessa Meier – tfdirector@surfriderwlam.org
The West LA/Malibu Chapter Task Forces include:
Malibu Legacy Task Force
Malibu Legacy Task Force is monitoring the Malibu City Councils actions as it completes the Legacy Park Projects. The Council has a historic opportunity to improve F rated water at Surfrider Beach, and the Task Force is working to ensure that the proposed water treatment project in Malibu’s Civic Center is constructed in ways that will help the beach meet clean water standards. Surfrider has been working toward improving water quality at this beach for over fifteen years, and we believe the public should be able to enjoy this world famous beach without the risks to their health.

Topanga Task Force
The Topanga Task Force monitors the LA County and State Parks actions as they update their septic systems, and return the state owned area of the beach to a natural lagoon park. This is a great place for new volunteers to learn about community advocacy with seasoned task force members.
Santa Monica Pier Task Force
The Santa Monica Task Force focuses on the identification and elimination of problems contributing to beach and ocean pollution in Santa Monica, with special attention to the waters in the immediate area of the Pier. Working in cooperation with the area’s other environmental organizations, the Santa Monica Task Force keeps water quality problems and their solutions foremost on the agendas of all responsible governmental, political and commercial entities until solutions are achieved.
